Delaware County Council Member Christine Reuther Visits Stetser Elementary School in Chester

As part of the County’s celebration of Black History Month, Delaware County Council Member Christine Reuther visited Stetser Elementary School in Chester this morning.

During her visit, Council Member Reuther read two books celebrating Black American success stories. First, she read “Trombone Shorty: A Picture Book Biography,” the Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award-winning picture book biography from Grammy-nominated musician Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and celebrated illustrator Bryan Collier.

The beautifully illustrated book tells the fascinating story of Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, a young boy from the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans who dreamed of playing music despite not having the means to buy an instrument. From being lifted through a crowd to perform with Bo Diddley as a child, to becoming a Grammy-nominated musician, Trombone Shorty's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. His story inspires hope in the hearts of future generations and music lovers worldwide.

She also read “Game Changers: The Story of Venus and Serena Williams,” by Lesa Cline-Ransome, with illustrations by James E. Ransome. "Game Changers" celebrates Venus and Serena Williams' journey from determined young girls to tennis legends. Through vibrant illustrations, it captures their sisterly bond, early challenges, and rise in a sport where they broke barriers. Their story of perseverance and excellence, masterfully told by Cline-Ransome, inspires and uplifts. It was great meeting the bright young students and the teachers at Stetser Elementary!

We extend our thanks to Principal Dr. Lavada Greene, the staff including Ms. Sammons, Ms. Ruiz, and both Ms. Robinsons, and all the Kindergarteners for their warm invitation and enthusiastic participation!
