Summary

The Autopsy Technician prepares for autopsies and the dissection of bodies, including evisceration and removal of the brain, separation of organ blocks and special dissection techniques, sterilizing/disinfecting instruments, setting up equipment and supplies, and preparing specimens, as directed.


Essential Duties

Under the general supervision of the Chief of Forensic Investigations:

Weigh and measure human remains.

Photograph organs and prepare toxicology samples, blood, urine, and vitreous fluids.

Draw biological fluid samples.

Maintain confidentiality of information on all cases; abides by HIPAA Rules.

Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the morgue and its associated equipment.

Assist forensic pathologists with autopsies, weight descendants, weighing organs, sewing up bodies, proper packaging, and labeling of evidence to preserve the chain of custody evidence.

Contacting funeral homes regarding the release and picking up of decedents.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum of an associate degree, EMT or nursing degree, may be able to substitute experience for a degree.

Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.

2 years of experience in a medical field such as nursing, surgical technology or experience working with autopsy procedures and practices, including evisceration.

Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology required.

Ability to handle foul odors.

Must be able to work any shift as necessary in a 24-hour period, including weekends and holidays.

Strong writing and oral communication skills.
