Residents reminded to sign up for a free card and explore books and resources at their local library

This September Delaware County Libraries are joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for National Library Card Sign-Up Month. The initiative is aimed at reminding residents that a library card is the key to adventure, academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries across the country unite in a national effort to ensure that not just every child, but every individual, signs up for their library card. This year, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are going on an adventure as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month nationwide. They’ll be promoting the value of a library card and bringing attention to the many ways libraries transform lives and communities.

A library card opens up a world of infinite possibilities through a wide range of resources and services. From children’s storytimes and homework help to computer classes and resume assistance, libraries transform lives through literacy and education. By offering online databases, books, unique programs and internet at no cost to library cardholders, libraries enrich the lives of residents of all ages.

“We would love to see everyone in Delaware County obtain their free library card so they have access to all of the wonderful resources we offer,” says Delaware County Libraries Director Catherine Bittle. “Our libraries really do have something for everyone!”

Residents can apply for a free library card at their local library. Delaware County Libraries will also hold registration in the lobby of the Delaware County Government Center (201 West Front St. Media, PA) on Sept. 25 from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Residents can also register for a library card online: www.delcolibraries.org
