Delaware County Council joined Richard Paul, Chairman of the Delaware County Heritage Commission and members of the Heritage Commission and Planning Department on May 15 to recognize May as Preservation Month.
Established in 1973 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, May is recognized as National Preservation Month. Throughout the month local preservation groups, historical societies, and business and civic associations participate by holding events that promote the social and economic benefits of preserving historic places and celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country.
Delaware County has a rich history with landmarks throughout the County for residents to visit and learn about our heritages, cultures, and history. Sites such as the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford, the historic courthouse in Chester, the Swedish Cabin in Upper Darby and the old Armory in Media are just a few examples.
Members of the Delaware County Planning Department, the Heritage Commission, local municipalities, historical societies and also individuals from the community are dedicated to preserving and honoring the historic sites throughout our County. The Heritage Commission’s mission is to oversee the rich heritage of Delaware County and to support those organizations within the County that are promoting and preserving the County’s cultural legacy. Commission members accomplish this through outreach within the historic communities of Delaware County, as well as providing a resource base for these organizations and individuals.
“Preservation is not just about saving history. It’s about managing growth, revitalization, fostering local pride and maintaining the vibrant character of all of our neighborhoods,” said Chairman John McBlain.
Following the resolution presentation by Council, the Heritage Commission presented their 41st annual Preservation Awards. These awards are given annually to individuals and groups who are dedicated to preserving Delaware County’s landmarks along with the written and verbal history.
