Delaware County Council joined leaders of the Delaware County COVID-19 Task Force and dozens of staff and volunteers on June 5 in closing the Aston Community Center Covid-19 Vaccination Clinic after four highly successful months.
The Aston Community Center vaccination clinic, one of the first opened by the County, dispensed over 69,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to nearly 40,000 people, vaccinating nearly 10% of the adult population of the entire county. This achievement was possible due to the selfless efforts of hundreds of volunteers, nurses, nursing students, clinical staff, and employees of multiple County government departments under the direction of the Emergency Services Department, the Department of Intercommunity Health and the Citizen Corps of Delaware County.
Volunteers and staff combined to contribute a staggering 26,000 hours of work.
During the closing day, Delaware County Council Vice Chair Dr. Monica Taylor thanked those in attendance, including dozens of volunteers and staff who were on hand for goodbyes and to mark the proud, though solemn, occasion.
“I cannot thank you enough for the amazing work you have done here over the past four months,” Dr. Taylor told the team. “Thank you to the Aston community and the surrounding communities for coming together at such an important time. The work done here was lifesaving for thousands of our residents.”
Delaware County extends its thanks to the many citizens of Delaware County (as well as those from surrounding counties), the Citizen Corps of Delaware County, the volunteers from the American Red Cross, and the nurses and nursing students from Villanova University, Neumann College, Widener University, Delaware County Community College and General Healthcare Resources, as well as the Aston Township Police and staff and Stat EMS for outstanding effort during a critical time in the long fight against COVID-19.
The closure of the site, in operation since January 20, 2021, was planned as the number of residents still in need of a vaccination dwindled and the County transitions away from multiple large-scale vaccinations clinics capable of vaccinating over 1,000 residents per day towards smaller, more mobile community pop-up vaccination clinics. These pop-up clinics, accessible to residents who may not have an easy means of transportation, will operate in municipalities throughout the county and offer free vaccinations at churches, parks, fire stations, and libraries.
