As part of the ongoing mission to help feed families in need, Delaware County and the Department of Human Services, in conjunction with Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Senator Tim Kearney, Senator John Kane, Senator Amanda Cappelletti, State Rep. Jennifer O’Mara and State Rep. Chris Quinn will be holding a contactless drive-thru food drive collection on Saturday, March 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Broomall Fire Company.

Delaware County residents and businesses are encouraged to donate food and personal hygiene products. Local food pantries who will be on-hand to collect the donations, which will then be distributed to residents throughout Delaware County. It’s critical that we help our neighbors in need.

Suggested donations include: Canned vegetables, rice, flour, cereal, powdered/evaporated/boxed milk, oil, sugar, salt, peanut butter, deodorant, toothpaste, bar soap, and feminine hygiene products. In addition, this is the first food drive in which we are specifically requesting specialized ethnic foods to assist Upper Darby pantries. Suggested ethnic foods include dry beans (black, pinto, kidney), flour (gram, semolina (sooji), whole wheat, maseca (tortilla flour), fufu, canned fish (sardines, tuna) and canned corn, okra, spinach, and meats.

Food insecurity impacts the Delaware County community, and the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened access to food. The County has significantly expanded its efforts to address food scarcity beyond the traditional annual holiday food drive held each December.

Since April of 2020, Delaware County has conducted or helped coordinate 13 food drives, including multiple holiday food drives held in December, and has worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, the Department of Emergency Services, and Pennsylvania National Guard to coordinate the collection and distribution of hundreds of thousands of meals and countless food items, personal hygiene products, and pet food.
