Released: July 8, 2022

The Delaware County Health Department (DCHD) announced today that the first ‘pool’ of mosquitoes in Delaware County positive for West Nile virus has been identified. The Environmental Health Division announced that thus far, West Nile virus activity in the mosquito population has only been found in Marple, Tinicum, and Aston Townships as well as Yeadon Borough. However, the Health Department cautions all residents to be alert.

“In addition to the annual efforts by the Environmental Health Division team to control mosquitoes throughout the County, we all have a role in preventing the spread of West Nile virus,” said Delaware County Health Department Director, Melissa Lyon. “West Nile can cause serious disease and even death. Prevention is key to staying safe.”

West Nile virus is an infection that is spread by infected mosquitoes biting humans that can cause neurologic symptoms. Many people who are infected with West Nile do not develop symptoms, however, one in five people infected will develop flu-like symptoms and fever. One in 150 people infected will develop severe West Nile virus infection that causes inflammation of the brain or spinal cord that can lead to death. People of all ages can be infected with the West Nile virus but those 50 years and older are at the highest risk for severe disease and death. Unexplained headaches, weakness, and fatigue are symptoms of West Nile virus and those who experience these should reach out to their primary care provider.

The most effective way to prevent the spread of West Nile virus is to keep mosquitoes from breeding on your property. To protect themselves and to help prevent the spread of West Nile virus, residents are encouraged to remember the ‘Three D’s’:

DRAIN - Buckets, flowerpots, pet water dishes, clogged rain gutters, and other sources of standing water outside your home

DRESS - Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when you’re outdoors, weather permitting

DEFEND - Wear insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus on exposed skin when outdoors
