"Early detection through mammogram screenings is critical for successful treatment of breast cancer," said Delaware County Health Department Director Melissa Lyon. "We are honored to continue our partnership with the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in the pursuit of providing essential health services in our community."
Recent data shows that women age 50 and over in Delaware County and across Pennsylvania are at nearly 9 times higher risk for invasive breast cancer than women under 50. According to the American Cancer Society, early-stage breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of 99 percent. Later-stage cancer has a survival rate of 27 percent. Mammograms help detect breast cancer earlier, leading to less aggressive treatment and a higher rate of survival.
