In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024, the Delaware County Health Department (DCHD) and Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital are bringing back its “Day of Breast Cancer Awareness” by providing free mammogram screenings at the Delaware County Wellness Center in Chester, 151 W 5th Street Chester, Pa. 19013, on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Registration is required for this screening opportunity.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., there are over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Locally, recent data show that women age 50 and over in Delaware County and across Pennsylvania are at nearly 9 times higher risk for invasive breast cancer than women under 50. People have better results when testing happens early.
“Early detection is so important because we can find it at an early stage before it spreads, making it easier to treat,” said Delaware County Health Department Interim Director Lora Siegmann Werner “Delaware County is united in its effort to detect and prevent breast cancer, one mammogram at a time.”
All women ages 40 and over, with or without insurance, and with no prior diagnosis of breast cancer, are eligible to register. Limited appointments for mammogram screenings are available, and registration is required. Registrants will also be able to speak with DCHD staff and discuss other health services that are offered by DCHD to Delaware County residents.
To register for the screening, call the Delaware County Wellness Line (Enformacion en Español llama a…) at (484) 276-2100, or request an appointment by email at DelcoWellness@co.delaware.pa.us. Registration takes only a few minutes, and all registered individuals will receive a confirmation call back.
