Growing Up with Vaccines - What Parents should Know
Immunizations are NOT just for children! Whether a young adult, middle-aged adult or senior citizen, we ALL need immunizations to keep us healthy.
3 Important Reasons for Adults to get Vaccinated
All children should be immunized at regular health care visits. Beginning at birth, immunizations are very important in keeping our children healthy. The recommended immunization schedule urges shots starting at birth and going through 24 months of age, with boosters and catch-up vaccines continuing through the teenage years and into old age.
Shots can protect children against many diseases such as, diptheria, tetanus (lockjaw), pertussis (whooping cough), polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), hepatitis A and B, hib meningitis, seasonal flu and pneumonia.
More than 50,000 adults die each year in the United States from vaccine-preventable diseases. The use of both new and established vaccines has great potential to promote longer, healthier lives for all of us.
There are 10 different vaccines that are recommended for adults, including vaccines for measles, meningitis, chickenpox, influenza and pertussis (whooping cough).
Updating your vaccinations now can help prevent these dangerous and life-threatening diseases. If you are not sure if your vaccines are up-to-date, speak with your doctor to make certain that you are protected.
